Direct Connection of Symbol Scanner and Zebra Printer

I have heard in several conversations with Zebra folks that it is possible to directly connect a Symbole scanner serially to a Zebra (without going through a computer of any kind) and fill out a previously designed and loaded Zebra form and output a label.

For example, the user would scan 4 labels and then have the Zebra printer generate a combined label.

From a strictly soiftware point of view, does anyone know what the code to generate such a form might look like?

I realize this is an old post, but for anyone who is interested in this same thing, there is a way to do this.  The technology is called ZBI and it is essentially a way for a developer to write a simple application that runs inside the printer.  The application can be written to take inputs from, say, the serial port to create a label format and print it.  This technology is in all of the stationary Zebra printers and most of the newer mobile printers.  It is a licensed technology though. You have to get a license to turn on the functionality and use it.  We have a basic eclipse based IDE for it.  Full API's and a couple of examples are in the ZPL Programming Guide.  We also have more examples on km.zebra.com, but you have to register for that site to see them.
