Hi, I am debating whether it is necessary to have an external power supply with the LS7708 when connected to the IBM Surerpos 300. It has 5 volt USB ports but not sure it can supply adequate current. Also it has 12volt "power plus" usb ports but I guess are not suitable at all. If the the 5volt port is rated at say 500mA , would that be too marginal if the spec for the scanner is 450mA nominal ? What is the minimum required current rating on the port that the 7708 needs? I want to avoid using external power at all cost due to the reluctance on the customer side and potential competitive disadvantage it has. Any advice welcome. Thanks.

You will not need external power if:
- the cable used is less then 8.5´
- no additional scanner (or others) are connected to the LS7708
Power requirements to the LS7708 are designed to run on a “standard USB port”, a feature that makes us unique.
The Power Plus does not bring any benefit to us, in terms of power. We use only the 5V portion of that anyhow; the “high power” portion is not connected in the cable. It’s only a matter of having that connector on our cable.
Best of luck!
